AGGREGATE RESOURCE STUDY

2009

N/A

The Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources commissioned the State of the Aggregate Resource in Ontario Study (SAROS) to get an up-to-date understanding of the current status and future issues facing the Province with respect to aggregate resources.

MHBC was the lead consultant for Paper 2: Future Aggregate Availability and Alternatives Analysis. The purpose of Paper 2 was to review close to market supply policies for other jurisdictions, prepare a planning constraint analysis for selected bedrock areas in southern Ontario, determine the feasibility of alternative sources of aggregate, and determine the feasibility of long distance aggregate transportation modes including the calculation of greenhouse gas emissions. The findings from this study will assist future policy discussion.

MHBC also participated in the preparation of three other SAROS papers. This work included the assessment of potential impacts of various development patterns on aggregate consumption and demand. A review of aggregate recycling and reuse policies in Official Plans was also undertaken. Finally, techniques to estimate and maximize reserves in existing licences were studied.
