KING CITY, ON
SHOPPERS DRUG MART
GREYFIELD / INTENSIFICATION
2008 - 2009
DANIEL CUSIMANO ARCHITECTS INC.
Shoppers Drug Mart purchased a vacant greyfield lot once used as a car dealership in the downtown core of King City for development of their retail store and medical clinic. The Township of King, concerned with the sensitive heritage features in their King City downtown core, challenged Shoppers Drug Mart to propose a building and design that complements the existing historic character of the Village and assists in strengthening the viability of the King City core area.
MHBC worked with Shoppers Drug Mart and the Township of King to come up with a two-storey, mixed use building that met the challenge. A combination of heritage brick, awnings, gooseneck lamps, wrought iron fencing and architectural details to the facade helped to establish a heritage sensitive building that sets a standard for new development within the King City core. In addition, this store will be the first LEED certified Shoppers Drug Mart in Canada, using elements such as bioswales and drought resistant plant species to instill a more environment-conscious approach to its operation in the Township.
